Abstract: This paper presents a pilot study on a pedagogical innovation using the HyFlex model in the Public Speaking for Success (PSFS) module at a private education institution in Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. The approach was designed to increase student access, autonomy, and engagement without compromising learning outcomes. Unlike traditional delivery methods, the Hybrid-Flex (HyFlex) model allows students to participate face-to-face, synchronously online, or asynchronously, while achieving equivalent learning outcomes across all three modalities (Beatty, 2019). Over a 14-week semester, students engaged in a structured blend of AI-guided micro-lectures delivered through the myTIMeS learning management system, live online workshops via Microsoft Teams, and in-person tutorials culminating in a live speech showcase. The study adopted a mixed-methods research design, combining a retrospective pre–post survey using a 5-point Likert scale administered to 28 undergraduate students, qualitative open-ended reflections, and comparative grade analysis against a previous cohort of 40 students taught in the traditional face-to-face format. Results reveal marked improvements across all eight measured constructs, with the most notable gains in confidence (62.4%), audience engagement (52.7%), as well as vocal and body delivery (45.0%). A pairedsample t-test confirmed these gains are statistically significant (p < 0.05). Grade distribution data indicate that no students failed in the HyFlex cohort, compared to four failures in the prior cohort. Student reflections highlighted flexibility, AI-supported learning, and the empowering effect of live performance as key enablers of growth. As the first public speaking module at the institution to adopt a HyFlex design, the PSFS module demonstrates the potential of flexible, student-centred learning environments to enhance communication skills in higher education. These findings invite further longitudinal and multi-site research to examine scalability and long-term impact.
